APRL (April Capalungan) is an artist and designer innovating with paper’s interactive materiality.
In 2023, APRL gained international recognition as the recipient of the Emerging Paper Engineer Prize*.
*Issued by the Movable Book Society for her undergraduate thesis, A Tail’s Tale”: An Interactive Picture book About Child-Pet Companionship in Enhancing Emotional Literacy for Children Ages 7 to 11.
APRL, without an “i”, reflects how her work goes beyond herself – embracing the collaborative nature of creativity.
Inspired by children’s imaginative way of seeing the world, she designs interactive experiences translated into sculptures, installations–even picture books, pop-ups and stop-motion.
Through creating levels of interactivity with the material's tactile charm is her invitation for the audience to become part of the story too.
While still at the infancy of her creative pursuit, she actively participates in group exhibitions and fair shows in the Philippines, and internationally, including the USA, Denmark, and Turkey.
APRL reimagines how stories unfold.
As an extension of her artistic practice, she also finds joy in facilitating workshops and designing print and stop-motion animation.
A workshop series exploring boundless tactile play in fostering intuitive creative expression.
An independent print and stop-motion studio handcrafting lovely stories through paper.
Let's reimagine paper together.
