Curator Dr. Dayang Yraola
This exhibit is an attempt to create a heterotopic city under flood waters, which also showcases characters, objects, survival tools that are associated with this milieu.
The title is an interplay of the common Pinoy moniker bahala na— both used in its sense as a “surrender to give up” and “surrender to just keep pushing on”. The title may also be read as baha ‘la na (baha wala na), a wishful thinking that we can get rid of baha (flood). Flood/ing is just one of the many ills of modern life. Being one that is most prominent in the recent times, we borrow flood/ing as a metaphor to the challenges that we face as individuals, as families, as institutions, as society, and as a people. This is a project to pause and ponder, on our role, not only as a victim, but also as a possible solution.
The exhibit borrows a sense of wonder that is uniquely endowed in children. The kind of wonder that can imagine a world much better than the one we currently have, despite and against everything that is disruptive and destructive. (dmnty, 2026)
